Crispy Homemade French Fried Onions (Better Than Store-Bought!)

If you love the flavor and crunch of classic French’s fried onions, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make them at home. These homemade French fried onions are extra fresh, incredibly crispy, and add a flavorful golden topping to all your favorite casseroles—from green bean casserole to cheesy potato bakes.

For perfectly thin slices, use a mandolin slicer, food processor, or a sharp knife. This recipe makes about 3 cups, which equals two 2.8-oz cans of store-bought fried onions.


Homemade French Fried Onions

Ingredients

  • 3 cups thinly sliced onions (about 3 small onions)

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Oil for frying


Directions

  1. Prep the onions: Soak the sliced onions in milk for 5 minutes, then drain. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Toss the onions in the flour mixture until coated, shaking off any excess.

  2. Fry until crispy: Heat at least 1 inch of oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Fry the onions in small batches, avoiding overcrowding so they cook evenly. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and crisp up.

Yields: About 3 cups
