Maple Bars (Old-Fashioned Maple Oat Dessert Bars)

I first discovered this recipe at a pancake breakfast and maple sugaring event years ago — they were serving these incredible Maple Bars and handing out the recipe. One bite and I was hooked!

Ever since then, these chewy, buttery maple oat bars have been a family favorite. They’re sweetened naturally with real maple syrup, full of nutty crunch, and perfect for dessert, snacks, or even breakfast on the go.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup maple syrup

  • 1 cup old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats

  • 1 cup chopped nuts (any kind — pecans, walnuts, or almonds work great)

  • 2/3 cup flour

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Heat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan.

  2. Mix ingredients: In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until well blended.

  3. Bake: Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. Cool and cut: Let cool completely in the pan, then cut into 16 bars.

Makes 16 bars.

Tips & Variations

  • Use pure maple syrup: The flavor is richer and more authentic than imitation syrup.

  • Add chocolate chips: For a maple-chocolate twist, stir in ½ cup mini chocolate chips before baking.

  • Make ahead: These bars store well in an airtight container for up to 4 days or can be frozen for later.
