Easy Chocolate Pudding Cake (Old-Fashioned Magic Dessert)

If you’re looking for a dessert that’s simple, budget-friendly, and absolutely irresistible, this Chocolate Pudding Cake is it! This vintage-inspired recipe is sometimes called a “magic cake” because as it bakes, a rich, fudgy pudding forms underneath the moist chocolate cake. The result? A warm, gooey chocolate dessert that’s pure comfort food.

Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream — it’s a crowd-pleaser every time!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 ½ cups sugar, divided

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, divided

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup milk

  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable or canola oil

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 ½ cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ¾ cup sugar, ¼ cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk, oil, and vanilla until a smooth batter forms.

  3. Spread batter evenly in the prepared pan.

  4. In a small bowl, mix the remaining ¾ cup sugar with ¼ cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.

  5. Carefully pour boiling water over the top without stirring. This is what creates the pudding layer!

  6. Bake for 40 minutes, then let cool for about 30 minutes before serving.

Makes 6–9 servings.

Tips for Success

  • For extra richness, use Dutch-process cocoa powder.

  • Best served warm — the pudding layer thickens as it cools.

  • Pairs perfectly with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
